A worm in your apple (pie)

Yesterday I was looking through some old Christmas photos on my computer to see where we've placed our tree in prior years (it's moved around quite a bit) and came upon this apple pie picture.

This is a classic Laurie apple pie.  See the second image where I zoomed into the center.  That's an apple made of pie dough with a little worm coming out of it.  I think it's cute and it makes me smile.  YMMV.

I miss Piegiving

This year for a few reasons we did not have Piegiving.  I love Piegiving.  It's like Thanksgiving but with pies, lots of pies.  In the past it has been held on the Saturday after Thanksgiving.  People come together with pies; they can be brand new fresh pies or left-over-from-Thanksgiving pies.

After looking at pictures of last year's Piegiving feast (that's my plate below... and I may have gone back for more!) Laurie and I both agreed that we would take extraordinary efforts if needed to have a Piegiving Day next year.

Great Sandwiches at Calef's Country Store, Barrington, NH

Sunday while seeing Sander and Melissa's new condo (which is wonderful), we stopped at Calef's for some nice deli sandwiches.  This is a great 'ol country store with apple cider donuts, root beer on tap, a pickle barrel, their own Calef's brand honey and jelly, home made bread,  a nice assortment of sharp cheddar cheeses, and.... well, you get the idea.

Here's their Web site with directions to their location in Barrington, NH.
https://www.calefs.com/

And below are a couple of pictures I took.

My sandwich:  I can't remember what they called it,
but it was like a turkey dinner sandwich on Anadama bread. A few
Cape Cod style potato chips are in the background.

Frost Today

Hopefully, the 28 degrees shown on our little weather station display (at 6:17 a.m.) means no more mosquitos and ticks.  Wish it would freeze all the Stink Bugs as well.

On the screen door this morning

I opened this door this morning and found a monarch buttefly warming its wings in the sunshine.  This specimen was in perfect condition, with no nicks or chips in its wings.  My guess is that it was newly hatched.  Because it was 50F this morning, the sun is needed to warm the wings.  It is through the wings that all the butterfly's blood flows and therefore spreading its wings to pick up the sunlight is the only way the butterfly can warm itself.

Laurie's birthday cake

Reminded us of the old Hostess cup cakes.  But this one was bigger and tasted better!

MIT Crew Alumni Assoc received Great Dome Award

Last night Laurie and I attended the annual awards and dinner event of the MIT Alumni Association's 2012 Alumni Leadership Conference. We were there to see Jack/Dad/Granddad accept a Great Dome Award on behalf of the MIT Crew Alumni Association. The Great Dome Award is the highest honor the Association bestows upon any of its organizations.

Of course, I didn't forget to bring a small point and shoot camera in my pocket! Here are a few pictures:

Sky shot taken this afternoon

After working indoors most of the morning, I decided after lunch it would be a good time to work out in the yard.

I sat down on the front steps to tie on my sneaks and looked up to see a beautiful blue sky with interesting streaks of clouds. Of course, I had to see if I could capture anywhere near the correct color with my camera. I took several exposures of this scene. This one was the best IMO.

Breakfast for Four

I took this at Poor Boys Diner in Londonderry, NH (right off exit 5 on route I-93) on our way to the Mt. Washington area for a day of trout fishing.  We needed sustenance for the long day of fishing in front of us!

There were four of us on today's trip.  Paul and I ordered the Poor Boys Cafe Special.  The blueberry pancakes and the plate to the left of it (3 scrambled eggs, 2 sausage patties, 2 pieces of toast and a fruit cup) are mine.  I subbed the fruit cup for the traditional home fries to save a few calories HHS.

If I had a twitter account, I'd write...

"... today I saw a squirrel bounding across our front lawn carrying a chartreuse tennis ball in his mouth."

Apparently this wasn't a unique event.  One of my colleagues found the following image, after a google search!

I'd be happy to give credit to the photographer, but I have no idea who took this image.
Here is a link that will take you to the source of the image, however:

Boats and Watercraft...

I just got an email from my photo club, regarding our upcoming September meeting.

As it turns out, one of the contests in September will be for images that fit the category:  boats and watercraft.  I don't know if the one below will score well or not, but I love it!  And it certainly fits the category.  It was taken along the Bow River in Banff, Alberta Canada

A couple of Colorado pictures, from Jaimie

Jaimie emailed me these fantastic pictures.  She came across these elk while hiking in Rocky Mountain National Park.

A better link for the Canadian Rockies posts

Yesterday's post provided a link to Post #1 of our two week Canadian Rockies trip. The link was missing the middle section, and didn't work for about an hour until I corrected it. It will now get you to Post #1.

But it will not get you to Post #2 which was published earlier today.

So, I have keyworded all the posts "west2012", so if you use the following link at any time you will get all the posts currently published, in chronological order, with the most recent at the top.

Here is THE BEST LINK:

Travelogue of our Canadian Rockies trip

I have just finished a series of about 14 posts (to be “published” at the rate of one each day) covering the 14 days of our Canadian Rockies trip.  They will appear on my photography blog, and I thought some of you might enjoying reading about the trip and seeing a few pictures.

I’ve taken a travelogue approach whereby I include a map each day of where we traveled and the pictures are not intended to be necessarily the “best ones” but ones that might tell a story of the journey.

I just uploaded the first post and it is here:

Also you can signup for email notifications of each update, and then unsubscribe at any time. When you click to the photography blog you will see a sign up box within the right hand margin of the blog.

A few from yesterday's NH fishing trip

8 a.m. breakfast at Poor Boys' Restaurant, just off  Rt. 93 in New Hampshire, at exit 5.  What you see is Poor Boys' Specials for each of the three of us. Two plates each.  I am embarrassed to say that I was the only one to finish everything.  (Well, obviously not too embarrassed!!)

Ellis River near Pinkham Notch.  We fished the Ellis River is two areas and the Peabody River.

8 p.m. treat before heading home.
