What's cookin'? Chicken and Broccoli Cobbler

We love rotisserie chickens.  They are relatively inexpensive at our local Market Basket grocery store, make an easy dinner, smell great, and the leftovers make great tasting barbecue-flavored chicken salad for the next day's lunch)

Laurie has now made a couple of nice recipes out of this cook book from Southern Living.  She's only just begun... there are so many more recipes that look good.

Tonight's main course:

Add a small salad with fresh avocado and a touch of cottage cheese:

And here we go:

What's bakin'? Dad's favorite cookies

I've been making these whole wheat chocolate chip cookies for my dad for about forty years.  They're his favorites.  Since he's one "who doesn't need anything", over the years these cookies have made a great gift for Father's Day or his birthday.

We celebrated his 89th birthday today, so I made a fresh batch early this morning. The ingredients make a very nice variation to the traditional chocolate chip cookie.  Of course, there are plenty of chocolate bits, but also peanuts (3/4 cup) and sunflower seeds (1 cup).  This combination doesn't appeal to everyone.  My kids for example were never fans.  All the more for my dad! (And for me, as it makes a big enough batch that the baker can squirrel away a few for his own use...)

I first munched on these during my first year of teaching after graduate school.  My roommate, Peter McDermott, had a friend from college who came to visit every once in a while.  Peter would bring these cookies to us a brown paper grocery bag. I think he was into recycling, or at least reusing.  I got the recipe from him, and the rest has been history.

Here is the recipe and a few pictures taken today.

All taken with my iPhone 5S.

A trip to Davidson's "Farm Stand" for Apple Cider Doughnuts

I spent a couple of hours walking around the Botanic Gardens in Shrewsbury taking pictures and smelling the roses.  (Actually, it was mostly the cherry blossoms that I smelled).

So, on the way I stopped at Davidson's for a couple of warm fresh cider doughnuts.  This sequence tells the story and makes it very clear what I was focusing on.

I can't believe I restricted myself to just two of these delights.

All images from iPhone.

Ahhh.  The reward.

My shirt pocket is pretty busy these days

I am wondering if my new (and first!) smartphone (iPhone 5S) will antiquate my 'ol spiral pad for taking notes and jotting down little reminders.  The iPhone is just awesome with its reminders (with dates, times, and alarms) and calendars.  I've even downloaded a few other apps looking for something even better than what came on the iPhone.  So far I really like the calendar app from "sunrise".

But I just don't have the heart to abandon the 'ol spiral pad and pen.  So... for now at least... I will carry both.

[An added bonus:  I just went to the dictionary app on my iPhone to look up "antiquated".  I wanted to be sure I used it correctly in the first sentence above!]

What's up with the snow?

Check out these shots from our front yard!

Parisian carrots from Trader Joes

Hey, I did all of this via my iphrone and the blogger "app". But I wasn't able to change the size or centering of the pictures.

I picked up this frozen vegetable today at trader's. Parisian carrots.  We think this is a new product...basically little round carrots. Actually, they are kind of hard to eat. Laurie lanced them with her fork, one at a time. I found I could scoop three up on a fork and gently balanced them on the fork as I brought them to my mouth.

What's cookin'? Chicken and Pesto Tart

Laurie has made this a couple of times.  Very yummy.  We rate it "good enough for company".

You'll find on my Webite (haha, cute, I mean Website) bigger images and some step-by-step triptych pages (to download for printing), if you want to make this recipe.
